Everette Byers

BOARDMAN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday at 6 PM at St. Christine Church for Everette E. "Ev" Byers, formerly of Canfield, who died Saturday of Pancreatic Cancer at Hospice of the Valley. He was a member of the church. "Ev" as his friends called him had been Treasurer/Controller of the former Carbon Limestone Company.

He was born November 1, 1929 In Youngstown, a son of Everette E. and Gladys Sanders Byers. Ev was a 1947 Graduate of Chaney, where he lettered three years in baseball and Tennis. He served as president of the National Honor Society and his class's mathematics award.

Ev attended Youngstown University and Denison University graduating in 1952. He served in the US Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He later attended graduate Schools at the Universities of Michigan, Houston, and Youngstown State, and was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Phi Omega Fraternities. An avid lover of music he played numerous instruments, and was the drummer for the popular Rollie Page Orchestra.

Earlier in his career he was involved with Interstate Restaurants, a three state franchisee of the popular Red Barn Restaurants, and Local Howard Johnston's. He was with Carbon Limestone for twelve years and upon its sale with its successor for approximately eight years. He retired in 1992 after a heart attack, but returned working part time as an accountant through 2005. Mr. Byers was a former treasurer of the local chapter of The National Association of Credit Management, Youngstown Chamber of Commerce, and a Junior Achievement advisor, and was an avid golfer.

Ev was proud that the Byers family was honored as the Mahoning County 1976 Bicentennial Urban family of the year, primarily for their volunteer efforts in the community, at the Canfield Fair.

He married the former Joan "Joannie" Toupin on Thanksgiving Day Novemberr 25, 1954 at St. Edward's Church in Youngstown, and has been lovingly been by her side for almost 60 years. Besides his Parents he was preceded in death by his son Brion in 1974, and several infant children.

He is also survived by his Daughter Joyce (Denny) Dripps of Hubbard, his son Brendan with whom he made is home, His daughter Kelly (Michael) Koenig of Youngstown, and his Son Terry (Billie Kay) of Austintown. He has six grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

He and the family wanted to express his appreciation to his long time Physician Dr. Benjamin Hayek, Dr. Medford B. Mashburn Medical Director of Hospice of the Valley, all of Hospice of the Valley's Wonderful employees and volunteers who treated him with much compassion and dignity.

Family and friends may pay their respects Wednesday from 5 to 7 PM at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel and Thursday from 5 to 6 PM at St. Christine Church.

Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
