NEW MIDDLETOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Thursday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, preceded by prayers at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel for Florence Trkula, 89, who died late Sunday evening at Assumption Village.
Florence was born Sept. 7, 1921, in Youngstown, the daughter of Pantaleone and Lucia Labruno Mariotti.
After graduating from The Rayen School, she worked in the steel mill where she met her husband, Sam Trkula.
Florence and Sam never had children of their own, but they had many nieces, nephews, and neighbors on whom the lavished their love, time, and generosity.
She was a member of the I.U.E., working at Packard Electric for 37 years before retiring in 1984. She made many friends, especially Lori Emerson and Connie Kashay.
After retiring, she enjoyed winters in Florida with her sister, Grace and brother-in-law, Pat Traficant. There she made countless friends with other snowbirds from all over the country. She loved to play the slots, especially in Las Vegas and also traveled to her ancestral homeland to visit her maternal aunt, Marietta Labruno.
Florence was noted for her beautifully crocheted Afghans, her fabulous lasagna, and the best kolachi ever, the recipe passed on to her by her beloved friend, Mary Troll.
In her later years, she always said how grateful she was to live long enough to enjoy her great-nieces and nephews. She was "Aunt Flo" to everyone.
She leaves behind her sister, Grace Traficant, with whom she made her home; her nieces, Patricia Van Cise, Jose' Jim Mondora; nephew Dean Lydia Traficant, to whom she was a second mother; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Gabriel, Nicholas and William; her sister, Antoinette Jannone; and a very special niece, Carolyn Mariotti.
Friends and family may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Hospital.
Special thanks to the staff at Assumption Village for the excellent care given to Aunt Flo.
