BOARDMAN - Prayers will begin Friday morning at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Dominic Church for Frances E. Atwood, 85, who died peacefully early Monday morning at her home.
Frances was born Oct. 28, 1927, in Youngstown, the daughter of Nicholas and Anna (Ellis) Popovich.
After graduating from Chaney High School, she worked as a stewardess for TWA Airlines and was blessed to have been able to travel the world. She later worked as a supervisor for the Mahoning County Department of Human Services, before retiring. She was a member of St. Dominic Church, the American Business Woman's Association, and Public Employees Retirees.
Her husband, William Atwood, whom she married in 1958, died Aug. 2, 1977.
She is survived by three daughters, Jane (Joe) Shorokey, Patty Atwood and Donna (Bob Kane) Atwood, all of Boardman; a son, William (Hilary) Atwood of Israel; two brothers, Ray (Phyllis) Popovich of Youngstown and Henry Popovich of New Middletown; 11 grandchildren, Nicholas, Gaby, Mimi, Sara, Aharon, Sarah, David, Ellesheva, Shira, Moishe and Avremi; and her dearest buddies, her dogs, Lovey, Scarlett, Sami and Toby.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Thomas, John, Paul, Eddy, and Joseph Popovich; and three sisters, Mary Kosmo, Dorothy Ferkula and Ann Gething.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to St. Dominic Church, Animal Charities, or Hospice of the Valley.
The Atwood family would like to thank Dr Garg and the employees of the Blood and Cancer center, Dr. Albani, and Leslie and Karen from Hospice of the Valley for their compassionate care for Frances during her illness.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday evening at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
