GARRETT L. 'BUD' CONNORS JR

NORTH JACKSON - Funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, for Garrett L. "Bud" Connors Jr., 90, who died Saturday afternoon, June 15, at home.
Garrett was born Dec. 26, 1922, in Youngstown, to Garrett Leo and Agnes Helen (Steinmetz) Connors.
He graduated from Austintown Fitch High School and served his country in the U.S. Army Tanker Division, was a POW during World War II, and received two purple hearts.
After his discharge, he worked for Republic Steel and attended and graduated from Youngstown State University while raising his family. He taught in the Hartford School District and at Jackson Milton School District, where he also became principal and superintendent and earned his MS degree in Education. He next taught at Liberty Schools and left there to work for the rest of his educational career for the Trumbull County Board of Education. While there, Garrett started and was Director of the NEOSERRC Program, which helped to identify special needs children with disabilities in northeast Ohio, and provided bussing, classrooms, and accredited teachers to educate them. The program was expanded to cover all areas of Ohio.
He loved animals and his hobbies included traveling, singing (choir and barbershop quartet), building and flying model airplanes, and reading.
Garrett is survived by his dear friend, Carla Muir; three daughters, Kathleen O'Connor of Seattle, Patricia Connors of Davis, Calif., and Penny (Randy) Burdge of Shawnee, Kan.; five grandchildren, Jennifer Roberts, George Guy, Alexandra Connors, Evan Burdge and Connor Burdge; and four great-grandchildren, Griffin and Henry Roberts and Penelope and Samuel Guy.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Connors; and a sister, Agnes Mae Connors.
Family and friends may call Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
