BOARDMAN ­ There will be services Friday at 1 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon
Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel for Genevieve I. Gagnon, 98, formerly
of Springfield, Mass., who passed away early Monday morning at Hospice
House.
Genevieve was born Dec. 27, 1908 in Elizabeth Township, Pa., the daughter of
Harry E. and Helen O. King Kirkland.
She had worked at Truscon Steel for more than 23 years as a billing clerk
and had been chosen Miss Truscon in the late 1920s. For this accomplishment,
Genevieve was awarded a gold medallion by Truscon CEO Walt C. Conger.
She and her husband later resided in Massachusetts for 32 years and
Clearwater, Fla. for eight years. She returned to Boardman in 1986.
She enjoyed many hobbies such as reading, playing cards, bingo, and
crossword puzzles. She also enjoyed trips to Las Vegas and Mountaineer Park.
Genevieve had a great appreciation for art and was an accomplished artist.
Her paintings had won numerous awards and ribbons including being the
featured artist at the Canfield Fair in 1996, and most recently received
honorable mention at the 2007 Canfield Fair just a few weeks ago.
Her husband, Douglas Gagnon, whom she married June 8, 1945, died Oct. 12,
1989.
She is survived by a sister, Anne Anderson of Santamurgarita, Calif., and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters, Mary Black,
Lucille Kelly, Geraldine Stoll, Virginia Brod, and Audrey Evans; and five
brothers, Laverne, Clifford, Eugene, Robert, and Harry Kirkland.
Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
