Boardman: Services will begin at 9:15 AM Friday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:00 AM at St. Charles Church for George Alexander Grappo, age 74, who passed away peacefully in the presence of family at Hospice of the Valley, Poland on May 19, 2008. He was born in East Palestine, Ohio on February 1, 1934 to Michael & Lena DiGrappa Grappo. George was a 1952 Graduate of East Palestine High School, attended Youngstown State Engineering School, and was a member of St. Charles Parish.
George was a gifted mechanical design engineer with a prolific career spanning over 50 years. His peers characterized his work as flawless, always with a careful attention to detail in varied and complex industrial applications. His many other talents included fluency in Italian and he was a fantastic cook. He enjoyed camping, golfing, biking, skiing and playing cards with friends. Most of all, George enjoyed the company of family and friends.
As an accomplished musician, George played the accordion, organ and bass. He played professionally in bands and combos in Greater Youngstown since the 1950's and most recently enjoyed his own group's repertoire of ethnic and popular accordion music.
George was very proud of his Italian heritage. Twice he traveled to Italy, once with his Sister Carolyn in 1995 and then again in 2005 with his son Michael, to trace his family roots in Bonefro. The latter tour was hosted by the Mayor of Bonefro who assisted in locating distant relatives and the childhood homes of his parents.
George is survived by his wife of one year, Dorothy, his two daughters Marie Grappo of Boardman, Caroline Ron Angelilli of Canfield, his son, Michael Rachael Grappo of Boston, two step-sons Terry Yonker of Hudson, Denny Debbie Yonker of Kent and a step-daughter, Sherry Bill Lain of Stuart, Florida. He leaves his siblings Carolyn John Gallagher of New Jersey, Mary Louise Andrus and Jim Donna Grappo of East Palestine, Ohio. He'll be missed by his four grandchildren, Lena, Renee & Ron Angelilli and Allegra Grappo.
Friends may call from 4 PM to 8 PM Thursday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
