YOUNGSTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church for George R. Velk Jr., who passed away Tuesday evening at the Hospice House.
George was born Feb. 23, 1931, in Youngstown, the son of the late George and Mary (Kaschak) Velk.
George was a graduate of Chaney High School, where he participated in the band and orchestra. George played the trumpet and the guitar and often played in local bands in the 50s and 60s. George also attended Youngstown State University. He worked in the engineering department at Truscon Steel before joining the Coast Guard in 1951. George also was a member of the Youngstown Fire Department for nine years, after which, he began his career as a salesman for O'Neal Awning Company. He retired in 2006.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Sally (Schrum) Velk, whom he married Oct. 31, 1959, and who passed away May 12, 1999. Also preceding George in death were his two sisters and brothers-in-law, Arlene (Jerry) Ramsey and Mary (John) Gibala; brother John Velk; and brother-in-law Francis Jakupcin.
George will always be remembered lovingly by his daughter, Shannon (Paul) Fraelich; his son, Ryan Velk; his grandchildren, Jake and Luke Fraelich, and Sara and Ryan Velk; a sister, Verna (Francis) Jakupcin of Youngstown; and brothers Edward (Bernadette) Velk and Dr. Gene (Sandy) Velk DDS, both of California. George shared his heart and love with his dear friend and companion of 14 years, Karen Willshaw. He also leaves many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was a member of the Youngstown Saxon Club and Austintown Eagles, and in his younger life, he enjoyed many wonderful trips as a member of the Youngstown Ski Club. George loved life, cherished his family and friendships, and never had an unkind word for anyone. If you knew him, you will miss him.
Family and friends may pay their respects on Saturday, Feb. 14, from 9 to 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church and a Mass of Christian Burial will follow. Following the Mass, interment will take place at Resurrection Cemetery.
