AUSTINTOWN - Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Crossroads Church for George LeRoy York, 72, who passed away Monday evening at his home.
George was born Oct. 4, 1940, in Warren, a son of the late Howard and Margaret (Matthews) York.
George graduated from Warren G. Harding High School. He was a millwright for Cooperweld Steel and retired in 1984. He attended Harding football games every Friday night for 52 years. He was a very active member of the Crossroads Church, where he was head usher, Sunday school teacher and enjoyed attending their baseball games. George was a very avid sports fan, and very active with baseball, whether it was coaching, playing, watching or yelling. He also loved watching the Indians, Browns, and the Cavaliers.
George leaves his wife, the former Jayne A. Merrill, whom he married May 23, 2006; his daughter, Kim (Terry Cline) York of Niles; his son, Charles (fiance Brandi Mitchell) York of Columbiana; six grandchildren, Kara (TJ) York Bumbico, Amanda York, Annette York, Andrew Chryst, Cody York and Ryan Chryst; and five great-grandchildren.
George was also preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Adrhianna; three sisters, Betty, Jo, and Sandra; and five brothers, William "Bill," Howard, Larry, and Dennis.
Family and friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, material tributes may take the form of donations to the Crossroads Church.
Burial will take place at Crown Hill Burial Park.
