Gerald Cletus ?Jerry? Duerr, a resident of Canton and Boardman, OH for most of his life, died Saturday, December 9 at the Park Village Assisted Living Center in Dover, OH where he had resided for the past year. Jerry was born in Canton on August 6, 1908, to Joseph and Bertha Weber Duerr.
Jerry worked for 47 years at Republic Steel Corp. where he was a cost accountant at the Berger Manufacturing Division in Canton. In 1962 he was transferred to the Republic Steel Manufacturing Division in Youngstown where he was manager of the
Claims Department until retirement in 1973.
He was active in many civic and church activities. In Canton Jerry held leadership positions in the Stark County United Way Campaign and the Catholic Charities Campaign. He provided similar service to the Youngstown area United Way as well as serving as chairman of the finance committee and a trustee of the Community Corporation.
Jerry was a former president and treasurer of the Catholic Services League, member of the Child and Adult Mental Health Board, and former president of the Institute of Management Accountants.
In Poland, Ohio where he lived for many years, Jerry was a member and past president of the Poland Kiwanis Club, former president of the Samaritan Club, a trustee of R.S.V.P., and was active in the Poland United Way.
Jerry was a 70-year member of the Knights of Columbus where he held several offices in the Canton Council 341 and the Poland Council 4471.
Jerry was married to Margaret Meyer Duerr on September 11, 1937. She preceded him in death on August 10, 1981. Also preceding him in death were sister Zita L. Duerr, brother Kenneth H. Duerr, and half-brothers Ernest J. Duerr and Ralph J. Duerr. One brother, Aloysius A. Duerr of Canton, survives him.
Also surviving are four sons, Robert A. Barbara Duerr of Cary, NC, Michael T. Connie Duerr of Cary, NC, Daniel E. Duerr of Bellevue, WA, and Jeffrey P. Duerr of Chino, CA. Two daughters survive including Judith Guy Jeanblanc of Gladstone, MI and Kathy Carey Gardner of New Philadelphia, OH. Other survivors include 15 grandchildren, his dear niece Joan Komp of Canfield, OH, and many other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, Dec. 13 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Poland, OH. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Massillon, OH. Friends may call prior to services from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home in Poland. The family requests memorial donations be made to Holy Family Church in Poland.
