Boardman - Funeral Services will be Thursday at 9:45 Am at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland chapel and 10:30 AM in St. Dominic Catholic Church, Youngstown for Mr. Gilbert E. Prokop, Sr. age 77 of Boardman who died Sunday evening in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Youngstown with his loving family by his side.
He was born January 17, 1931 in Youngstown a son of George E. and Katherine Rusinak Prokop.
Gil was a graduate of Campbell Memorial High School, a graduate of Youngstown State University and received a Masters Degree in Education from Westminster College.
He was an Army Korean Veteran and a member of the church.
Gil had retired from the Youngstown School System in 1989 as the Athletic Director at South High after 37 years . During that time he had taught at many of the Youngstown schools where he had also been a dedicated coach to many teams. He was a Basketball coach at Princeton, an associate basketball and football coach at South, the head football coach at Volney Rogers, assistant football coach at Wilson and the Head football coach at Rayen High School.
Gil was also the pioneer Union negotiator for the Youngstown Teachers Association who fought for the privileges and benefits that they have today from the late 70's through the mid eighties. He was a member of the Youngstown retired Teachers Association. Besides being a full time teacher,
coach he also had worked at the Youngstown Sheet and Tube as a time keeper working three jobs at one time to support his family.
After his retirement Gil loved to work out at Club south where he was an avid spinner and exerciser and had done many Aerobic marathons to raise money for various charities.
He loved his Notre Dame fighting Irish so much that the last song that was played when he was leaving this world was the Notre Dame Fight Song.
He leaves his wife the former Gay Wollitz who he married 50 years ago Jan. 4, 1958; a daughter Colleen Bob Kelty of Boardman; 2 sons Gilbert Amy Prokop Jr. of Harrisburg, PA and Patrick Michele Prokop of Columbiana; a grandson Connor Kelty and 2 granddaughters Caroline and Juliana Prokop.
He was preceded in death by 2 sons Jeffery and Michael.
