YOUNGSTOWN - Private family services were held Saturday morning for Helen Johnson, 89, who died early Friday morning at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.
Helen was born April 12, 1926, in Youngstown, the daughter of Zsigmond and Mary (Paolo) Varga.
She attended Chaney High School and later worked as a waitress at the Balboa Grill, Master Bar and the Splendid Lounge. She was a longtime member of the former American Hungarian Reformed Church.
She was an avid fisher and loved to fish with her family. Helen also was an avid Bingo player and will always be remembered as always being fashionable, dressed in white.
In 1980, she caught a state record Musky and was awarded a trophy from then Gov. James Rhodes.
Her husband, James W. Johnson, whom she married Nov. 13, 1946, died March 1, 1991.
She is survived by a son, William E. "Bill" Johnson and his fiancé, Jeanne, of Youngstown.
She was preceded in death by two infant sisters; and three brothers, Steven and John Varga and Louis Vargo.
Helen's family has requested spiritual tributes be offered in prayers and material tributes to take the form of donations to the American Cancer Society in her memory.
