PENSACOLA, FLA. - Born on Feb. 26, 1926, Henry A. “Hank” Schaffer died on Feb. 16, 2019.
Hank was one of 11 children born to John and Dina Schaffer in Youngstown.
He was a World War II veteran, enlisting in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 17, 1944, and receiving an honorable discharge July 7, 1946.
Hank married Mary Frances Day on Aug. 20, 1949, and they shared over 50 years together before her passing in January of 2000.
Throughout his high school and college years, Hank was a gifted athlete in multiple sports. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame at both Chaney High School and Hiram College.
His working career was predominantly spent at Bessemer Limestone and Cement Company in Bessemer, Pa., where he served as safety director and director of personnel and industrial relations.
In addition to his spouse, Hank was predeceased by his parents, all 10 siblings and grandson, Gene Schaffer.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Jack (Claudette) Schaffer; his daughter, Mary Kay (Sam) Campbell; granddaughter Jessica Campbell; grandsons Brian Schaffer and Patrick (Tammy) Campbell; as well as three great-grandchildren, Brookston, Braelyn and Landree Campbell.
A Mass celebrating the life of Hank Schaffer was held at St. Paul Catholic Church in Pensacola, Fla., on March 6, 2019.
Hank’s final resting place will be next to his wife in Calvary Cemetery, with his interment scheduled for Thursday, May 2, 2019, at 11 a.m., with a service in the Calvary Cemetery Chapel.
Memorial gifts may be sent to the Holy Family Catholic Church in Poland or Villa Maria Education & Spirituality Center in Villa Maria, Pa.
Professional arrangements were handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel.
