BOARDMAN - Prayers will be held on Monday at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Dominic Church for James R. Duby Sr., 86, retired Professional Engineer, formerly of Hitchcock Road in Boardman, who passed away early Friday morning at Hospice House surrounded by his family.
James was born March 19, 1930, in Youngstown, a son of the late James P. and Margaret A. (Nelson) Duby.
James was a 1948 graduate of Ursuline High School and received his B.E. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Youngstown State University in 1952.
He was a retired Registered Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio. Various positions included Goodyear Aircraft Akron and U.S. Steel Youngstown. James transferred to RMI Titanium Co. Niles, in 1980 when U.S. Steel closed. He retired from RMI Titanium in 1992 as Supervisor-Mechanical Design.
He was a long time member of the Mahoning Valley Gaelic Society. There he served on numerous committees, was trustee for many years and was Financial Secretary for several years. James was honored as Gael of the Year in 1993.
James was former Limited Service Faculty Instructor in Machine Design at YSU. He was a life member and former Board Member of the Mahoning Valley Industrial Management Association, past chairman of the MVIMA membership drive, was elected to the Board of Control in 1973 and was vice president of District III in 1975. He was Program Chairman of U.S. Steel's engineering Explorer Post 249. James also has past memberships to the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers and Boardman Boosters. He was also a member of St. Dominic Church.
James enjoyed traveling, watching sports on TV, and crossword puzzles. He loved to attend plays, listen to music, go to restaurants, and dance. His greatest love was spending time with his family and friends.
His wife, Alberta Carney Duby, whom he married Nov. 27, 1952, passed away Dec. 5, 2003, after 51 years of marriage.
James is survived by his seven children, Dr. John C. Duby (Dr. Sara Guerrero-Duby) of Oakwood, Nancy Duby Carlon (Edward) of Chapin, S.C., Thomas B. Duby of Boardman, Barbara Duby Wilson of Springfield, Pa., Diane Duby Teets (Michael) of Canfield, Gregory J. Duby (Sherri) of Poland, and Atty. James R. Duby Jr. of East Lansing, Mich.; seven grandchildren, Christine Carlon Keating (Brendan), Bryan C. and Mary F. Duby, Ryan M. (Stacy) and Michelle A. Teets, Kylie Rose Duby and Jack M. Duby; two great-grandchildren, Randell "RJ" Keating and Claire M. Keating; and his special friend, Kathy Morley.
James was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Jane Duby and a son-in-law, John Wilson.
Family and friends may call on Sunday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
