James Dwyer

November 11, 1946 — March 23, 2012

BOARDMAN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at St. Christine's Catholic Church in Youngstown for Mr. James P. "Jim" Dwyer, who died Friday at his residence surrounded by his family.

He was born Nov. 11, 1946, in Youngstown, a son of James P. and Peg Pompoco Dwyer.

Jim was a third generation member of the Sacred Heart Church, where he attended and graduated from the parish school. He was a 1965 Ursuline High School graduate and a 1971 graduate of Youngstown State, where he majored in Public Administration, and held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.

When he was 18 years old, he began his career as a bailiff for Judge Martin P. Joyce in the Youngstown Municipal Court. In 1969, he moved to the Mahoning County Juvenile Court, where he served as the administrative director of that court.

While working in that court, Jim coordinated the funding, design, construction and operation of the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center, which opened in 1979. He then moved to the Mahoning County Probate Court, for which he served as the Court's Administrator and Chief Deputy under both Judge Leo P. Morley and Judge Timothy P. Maloney and retired in 2003.

Jim then went to work with his lovely wife, Mary Ann, at Tippecanoe Travel Service. He served on the Board of the Mahoning County Children Services, the Diagnostic and Evaluation Clinic and the Community Corrections Association. He was a member of the Action Organization, Theta Chi, AOH , Knights of Columbus and St. Christine Church.

Jim was a Democratic Precinct Committee Person and was very active in many judicial campaigns. He was an avid sports enthusiast and an avid golfer and Mill Creek Golf course was his country club. Whoever knew Jim knew him as a great storyteller who made everyone feel welcome and who "held court wherever he was."

He leaves his wife, the former Mary Ann Vasil, whom he married Jan. 10, 1976; and a son, James Patrick III of Boardman.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, and on Tuesday from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Mill Creek Golf Course, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road, Canfield, OH 44406, in Memory of Jim; or to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH 44512.
