YOUNGSTOWN - Prayers will begin at 12:30 PM Friday afternoon at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for James Edward McGinnis age 91, who died at the Hospice House with his
family at his side.
Mr. McGinnis was born July 31, 1917 in Oxford, Mass., the son of John J. and
Jennie C. Fenner McGinnis. His family moved to Youngstown which Mr.
McGinnis was still a young boy.
During the Depression, Mr. McGinnis worked in 3C Camps Civilian
Conservation Corps in various parts of the country, prior to enlisting in
the Army. Mr. McGinnis was a veteran of WWII, serving as a sergeant with the
135th F.A. 37th Division throughout the South Pacific on Guadalcanal and
Bouganville, earning a Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action.
After the war, Mr. McGinnis remained active in veteran community affairs,
serving as a member and past president of the Mahoning County Veterans
Commission. He was life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled
American Veterans. He was past commander of the United Veterans Council,
charter member of Am vets National in which he held many offices,
including State and District Commander. He was chairman of the Annual
Memorial Day Parade, as well as Parade Marshall in 1990. He was selected
Veteran of the Year in 1982. He was past chairman of the Grave Decorating
Commit tee of Mahoning County, member of the 37th Division Association and
past president of the Youngstown Chapter and of the National Executive
Committee.
Mr. McGinnis was also the host/moderator of the ³Veterans Show,² weekly on
WBBW radio. He was an active member of the committee to ³Keep the Man on the
Monument in downtown Youngstown.² His biography is listed among the ³Who¹s
Who in the Midwest edition from 1980 to 1981.
Mr. McGinnis was a graduate of Youngstown College with a B.A. degree in
1950. For over 50 years, he worked for the Patterson Buckeye Company as an
accountant, officer manager, and eventually as treasurer and comptroller,
retiring in 2003.
He also enjoyed memberships in the Knights of Columbus third degree, the
Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Mahoning Valley Gaelic Society, the
National Society of Public Accountants, the Youngstown State Alumni
Association Sigma Kappa Phi, as well as being a charter member and usher
at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish.
Mr. McGinnis leaves to cherish his memory his wife of more than 67 years,
the former Catherine Irene Cronk, whom he adored and married July 12, 1941;
three daughters, Mrs. Barbara Shelby Cash and Kathleen, both of Poland and
Mrs. Patricia Richard Milheim of Zanesville; three sons, James B. McGinnis
of Cincinnati and John E. McGinnis of Wilboughley Hills and Robert M.
Connie McGinnis of New Wilmington, Pa.; 13 grandchildren; 21
great-grandchildre n; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers; and three sisters.
