BOARDMAN - James R. "Dick" Popney, 79, died peacefully early Monday morning at the Commons at Greenbriar, with his wife by his side.
Dick was born Aug. 15, 1938, in Youngstown, the son of Leon and Anna (Dunn) Popney.
He was a 1956 graduate of Chaney High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduation. During the time he served, Dick worked as an Army medic in the Army Medical Corps.
After being discharged from the Army, he worked for U.S. Steel in the payroll department. Dick later graduated from Youngstown State University, receiving his Bachelor's degree in Nursing.
He worked several years for Mr. DeBartolo as a private nurse and later at Southside Hospital. Dick eventually retired after 30 years from St. Elizabeth Hospital in 2003.
Dick was a member of the Holy Family Church. He also volunteered at the HIV Clinic and helped Hospice of the Valley with fundraising.
Dick is survived by his wife, the former Donna Smyczynski, whom he married Oct. 4, 1969; and three nieces, Debbie Ramps, Dody Kessler and Diane Vitullo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Patricia Jones and Delores Popney.
Per Dick's wishes, there will be no calling hours. A memorial service will he held at a later date.
Dick's family would like to thank the staff and nurses at the Commons at Greenbriar and the Crossroads Hospice nurses and aids for showing him compassion and excellent care during his final days.
