BOARDMAN - A prayer service will be held at 10:15 a.m. on Friday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel and a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Church, Boardman, officiated by Father Philip Rogers and Father Tim O'Neill for Mrs. Jean Ann Sfara, 81, who passed away Tuesday morning at the Hospice House after a brief battle with cancer and was surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on July 22, 1929, in Hillsville, Pa., to the late Nicola "Nicholas" and Margaret Ricciuti.
Jean has been a great beauty in her youth and had been May Queen of her parish of many years, St. Lawrence, before graduating from Bessemer High School in 1947. In 1951, she graduated from Pennsylvania State University, State College, Pa. At Penn State she had been a member of Phi Mu Sorority and had been nominated by her sorority for homecoming queen on the main campus.
She married Patrick E. Sfara Sr., on June 20, 1953, at St. Lawrence Church, Hillsville, Pa. They enjoyed 53 years of marriage, before he predeceased her on April 24, 2006.
After graduation from college, she began her career as a social worker with the Lawrence County Welfare Department in New Castle, Pa. and then joined the staff of St. Elizabeth Health Center on Belmont Avenue as a dietitian. Later, she became a much beloved elementary school teacher for 34 years at Hillsville Elementary, which later became Mohawk Elementary. She began her teaching career teaching first and then fifth grade. After her retirement in 1989, many of her students still kept in touch with her, and she often recognized them on outings and could remember the exact year in which she taught them. She often substituted at St. Charles School in Boardman so she could spend time with her beloved grandson, Nicholas.
Jean enjoyed many activities in her life and had been an active member of St. Lawrence Parish, its Council and Christian Mothers before moving to Boardman in 2006 after the death of her beloved husband, Pat and then became a member of St. Charles Parish.
She leaves her beloved children, Patrick E. Sfara and his wife, Marlene and Attorney Lynn Sfara Bruno and her husband, James A. Bruno; her four much-loved grandchildren, Nicholas James Bruno, Andrea Mark Arnio, Amanda Fryda fiance Joe Cleghorn and Ashley Fryda; her brother, Joseph J. Mary Lou Ricciuti of Solon; her two nephews, Joseph N. Annette and Jamie Ricciuti; two great-nephews, Joey and Victor Ricciuti; and a special cousin, John Ricciuti of Pittsburgh.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a special uncle, Silvio Ricciuti of Ellwood City, Pa. and his wife, Idea.
Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 9 to 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home.
