Canfield - Services will be held Sunday at 5:00PM at Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel for Jerome Jerry P. Deibel who passed away Friday morning at his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Deibel, the founder and president of Boardman Steel, was born August 11, 1924 in Youngstown, the eldest child of Peter and Irene Sause Deibel. While he spent the majority of his life in the Youngstown area, he traveled the world extensively and recently became a resident of Bonita Springs, FL.
After graduation from high school, Mr. Deibel attended college prior to being called upon to serve in World War II. He ended his military service as a Sergeant in the United States Army having seen significant action in the Central European Theatre, northern France, and at the Rhine River Crossing.
Upon returning, he enrolled in the engineering program at Iowa State University at Ames. Like many returning servicemen, he devoured his academic challenges, graduating early in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering with a Structural Engineering minor.
Using the experience he gained working as a Registered Professional Engineer at J.A. McMahon and as owner of Sause Structural Steel, he founded Boardman Steel, Inc. in April of 1963. This compnay was formed upon a driving vision and little else, as it initially has no facility, no equipment, and no steel inventory. Mr. Deibel successfully combined his design talents and those of other focused engineers with the skillful fabrication of structural steel. One of Mr. Deibel's greatest accomplishments is that BSI today has become known around the nation and many parts of the world as a precise organization capable of timely delivery of projects deemed impossible by many. He served as the company's only president until transferring the reins to his son, David C. Deibel.
Mr. Deibel always believed in commitment to one's community, and served the Youngstown area through numerous organizations including; Director of Bank One, Director of McDonald Steel, Director of the Florence Crittenton Home, and Director of the Regional Growth Foundation. He also served as Chairman of the Mahoning County Cancer Drive, and was on the Board of St. Christine's Parish at its inception. He was a member of the Ohio and National Society of Professional Engineers, Tippecanoe Country Club, the Duquesne Hunting and Fishing Club, Saxon Club, Chesterton Club, and the Friar Club. When not at work, he could be found on the golf course where he excelled at the game.
Mr. Deibel committed his resources to the greater Youngstown community giving numerous donations to Camp Fitch, Boardman High School, Youngstown State University and many other local organizations. His legacy lives on in the form of many structural and physical improvements.
