POLAND - Prayers will begin Saturday morning at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Church in Poland  for Joanne M. Smaldino, 72, who died Tuesday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown.

Joanne was born Aug. 27, 1937, in Youngstown, the daughter of Vincent and Mary Bassetti Tavolario.

She was a 1955 graduate of  East High School in Youngstown , where she was the head majorette for two years, and later worked for Ohio Bell until she began to raise her family.

She married her junior high sweetheart, Anthony Smaldino Sr. May 10, 1958 who grew up on the ?other end? of Bennington Avenue, the same street Joanne was raised. Joanne had a special quality of making her home your home. She was a great cook and an incredible entertainer.
As her family grew, she worked as a cafeteria worker for the Poland Schools and in 1985, became the owner operator of Smaldino?s Sunrise Deli. She, along with her husband and children, operated the deli until her retirement in 2006. Once her children left home she and her husband purchased the Sunrise Deli and Catering. For the next 25 years, her hospitality and special touch extended into every community of the Mahoning Valley.
She was a member of the Holy Family Church, enjoyed playing cards with her closest childhood girlfriends, and is remembered for her contagious laughter, and her gift of bringing out the best in people. Because of her big heart and giving spirit, she made a lasting impact on everyone she met.

Joanne lived for her family and is survived by her husband, Anthony M.
