Youngstown- John V. Caputo, 83, of 3915 Monaca Dr. in Austintown, died Tuesday, June 17th. at St. Elizabeth Medical Center after a short illness.
Mr. Caputo was born in Youngstown on March 8, 1925 to Joseph and Antoinette Carone Caputo. He graduated from Rayen High School in 1943 and attended Ohio University and the University of Wisconsin before earning his bachelor's degree in business administration from Youngstown College.
He worked for Chrysler Motors and then settled in for 26 years at Commercial Shearing of Youngstown as a manager of industrial engineering, retiring in 1985.
He was a member of St. Christine Catholic Church in Youngstown, the Bear's Club, a card carrying member of the Republican National Committee and a veteran of World War II -being decorated with a Purple Heart, a Bronze Arrowhead Award, Four Bronze Stars as well as many other meritorious military awards.
It's a pity there are no awards for non-military service. Society doesn't bestow medals for one's wit and humor, intelligence and grace, integrity and nobility.
Mr. Caputo should have won prizes for his steadfast service and dedication to his community and especially to his wife of fifty-seven years. There should have been some public recognition for a man who selflessly raised seven fine successful children, or who watched, with pride and satisfaction, as his grandchildren grew into responsible adults, or who lived to see his great grandchildren get off on the right foot with full knowledge that his guiding hand had such an enormous impact on the entire process.
But he never asked for or expected accolades. For him, simply doing the right thing was reward enough. What a fine, humble, and decent man he was. We will miss him very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Larry, and a sister Anita Gardner.
Besides his wife, Barbara Peebles Caputo, who he married February 3, 1951, he leaves a brother Eugene Billie Caputo, a sister Margie Price, a sister-in-law Edith Caputo; three daughters, Margie Leonard Chianese, Barbie John Marakas, Nanci Dean Ciccone, four sons, Joseph D. Terri, Charles P. Tiffani, John V. , Jr Kathy and James E. Caputo. Twenty-two grandchildren and four great grandchildren- all who loved and admired him.
