POLAND - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Nicholas Church for John S. ?Hank? Checkel, 88, who died Saturday afternoon at Beeghley Oaks Medical Center.
John was born Jan. 21, 1922, in Struthers, to the late Stephen and Mary Antonia Filip Checkel.
He was a member of St. Nicholas Church. John was a graduate of Struthers High School, class of 1940, as well as a graduate of New Castle School of Trades.
John was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving as a Corporal in the 168th Field Artillery Battalion. John received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Stars and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star for his service.
He enjoyed gardening and was an avid golfer, he enjoyed all types of sports. Before his service in World War II, John was a member of the American Legion Baseball League for two years.
John owned and operated his own manufacturing business in downtown Youngstown for over 40 years.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by eight sisters.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 62 years, the former Olga Check, whom he married Aug. 7, 1948; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Patrick Alberti of Virginia; and good friend Julius Balogh of Boardman.
Friends may call from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at church on Wednesday.
