John Gerberry

June 19, 1915 — January 4, 2009

BOARDMAN ­ Prayers will begin Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church for John A. Gerberry, 93, who passed away Sunday afternoon at the Hospice House surrounded by his family.

John was born June 19, 1915 in Youngstown, the son of Andrew and Veronica Gerberry.

He was a graduate of South High School and later served in the Army during WWII and had attended Youngstown College of Electrical Engineering. He had worked in management at Republic Steel Corporation, later retiring as the superintendent of the electrical department. He had moved to Ft. Myers, Fla. in 1978 and returned to the area six years ago. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and the Jednota Lodge, National Association of Electrical Engineers. He was an avid golfer and was a member of the Hideaway Country Club in Ft. Myers.

His first wife, the former Loretta Matiscik, died May 1, 1981.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Gerberry of Stanton, Mich.; a daughter, Carol Anthony DeAscentis of Boardman; one son, Dr. Robert Virginia Gerberry of Canfield; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a daughter-in-law, Joan Gerberry of Westerville.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Jack and Eugene Gerberry; two brothers, Edward and Joseph; a sister, Mary; and a
daughter-in-law, Kathleen Gerberry.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
