STRUTHERS ? John M. Jaros, 92, went home to the Lord at 11:55 a.m. on Monday April 19, 2010, at Pembrooke Place, following a lengthy illness.
John, affectionately known as ?Johnnie Jaros,? was born Jan. 3, 1918, in the Hazelton district of Youngstown, son of Michael and Kathryn Patrick Jaros. He was a lifelong resident of the Campbell-Struthers area.
During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy and received the Victory Medal. He began his employment career at Wilkoff Metals, then the Republic Steel Corp., retiring with 35 years of service. Afterwards, he worked in the sports program and at Struthers High School, where he was head of maintenance of the former Garfield Baseball Field and assisted in the care at the football stadium.
Mr. Jaros was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, serving as an usher for many years. He was a member of Sgt. Martin Sedlack VFW Post No. 7538 and it?s bowling league. He was also a member of the Youngstown Baseball Old Timers and the Jednota Lodge 731.
He is survived by his soulmate, the former Mary Jane Macabobby, whom he married Oct. 12, 1939; a daughter, Janette Larry Alt of Peoria, Ill.; two grandsons, John Jennie Alt and Jason Alt; three great-grandsons, Jacob Daniel Alt, Isaac Alexander Alt and Ethan Michael Alt; two brothers, Joseph VernieJaros of Struthers and Michael Betts Jaros of Austintown; a sister, Mary Spotts of Arizona.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Voytko.
The family will receive friends Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, where a Rosary service will be held at 4:30 p.m.
Prayer services will begin at 10:15 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home and continue at 11 a.m. with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church.
Entombment will follow with full military honors at St. John?s Roman Catholic Cemetery in Lowellville.
The Jaros and Alt families would like to give special thanks to John?s dear friends, Rick Eliser and John Sveda for all the love, care, and compassion they gave during his illness.
The family would also like to give thanks to the staff at Pembrooke Place and Southern Care Hospice for their outstanding care and compassion given to John.
