YOUNGSTOWN - Prayers will be held Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Christine Church, for John W. Lyden Jr., 75, who passed away Monday afternoon at the Cleveland Clinic from heart failure.
John was born Sept. 4, 1941, in Youngstown, the son of John W. Lyden Sr. and Agnes D. (O'Horo) Lyden. John was a lifelong north side resident.
He proudly attended St. Columba School and was a 1960 graduate of Ursuline High School. While attending Ursuline, John was an All-City Series guard on the Fighting Irish football team. It was his lifelong pride to have attended the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the football team until returning home after the death of his father. John then briefly attended Youngstown State University and joined his uncle and cousins working at the A.P. O'Horo Company. Upon his retirement as secretary treasurer at A.P. O'Horo, he briefly joined his son, Kevin, in K.T. Lyden Construction.
John was a past member of the Trumbull County Planning Commission and a member of the Liberty Township Zoning Board of Appeals. John was a former member of Ursuline High School Athletic Committee and was inducted into Ursuline Athletic Hall of Fame for football.
John was a former parishioner at St. Edward Catholic Church and then, St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hubbard, where he was on the Men's Renewal. He was an avid Notre Dame and Ohio State football fan and was immensely proud to have a son attend the University of Notre Dame.
John loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
John felt that he received many extra years of living due to the cardiovascular care provided by the Cleveland Clinic.
John was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Ellen (Holleran) Lyden.
He is survived by two daughters, Anne Marie Thompson of Lake Worth, Fla. and Karen (Jim) McHugh-Fornadel of Hilliard; two sons, Dr. Sean (Julie) Lyden of Brecksville, and Kevin Lyden of Liberty, with whom he made his home; one sister, Maureen (Lyden) Kennedy of Atlanta; and 10 grandchildren, Patrick, Katie, Erin, Megan, Shannon, Kaitlyn, Michael, Mollie, Michael, and Marissa.
