YOUNGSTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1125 Turin St. in Youngstown, officiated by the Rev. Michael Swierz, preceded by a 9:15 a.m. prayer service at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, for Mr. John "Mag" Mancini, 94, who passed away peacefully Monday morning at Hospice House in Poland.
Mr. Mancini was born on Sept. 15, 1921, in Youngstown, son of Dominic and Louise (Colangelo) Mancini, and remained a lifelong resident.
John worked for US Steel until 1965 as a laborer, and then worked for Mahoning County Engineers for another 10 years before his retirement. Prior to his employment, John enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard, serving in World War II. He was a longtime member of St. Anthony of Padua in Brier Hill.
John was a handyman. He enjoyed working with his hands, especially helping family members remodel their houses. He loved spending time at the family cottage on Lake Erie, especially with his grandchildren, whom he adored.
Lastly, John enjoyed watching Cleveland sports. One of his fondest memories was watching the Browns win the Super Bowl in 1964.
John's wife, the former Katherine Hanuschak, whom he married on June 10, 1944, died April 10, 1978.
John leaves to cherish all their wonderful memories, his two children, Kathy Mancini and Michael Mancini, both of Youngstown; sister Rose Tomidajewicz of Poland; three grandchildren, Anna Mancini, Jason Kerlek, and Katie (Doug) Kirchner; and seven great-grandchildren, Michael, Teresa, Katerina, Patrick, Ian, Mason, and Eli.
Besides his parents, Dominic and Louise, and wife Katherine, John was preceded in death by his three brothers, Chris, Pat and Sal Mancini; and his granddaughter, Skyler.
Family and friends may pay their respects Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown, following the service.
