JOHN R. 'JACK' MILLER SR
COLUMBIANA - Prayers will begin Saturday morning at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:30 a.m. at St. Brendan Church for John R. "Jack" Miller Sr., 78, formerly of the westside of Youngstown, who died Wednesday morning at Woodlands Assisted Living.
Jack was born Aug. 2, 1933, in Youngstown, the son of Anthony and Elizabeth Zegso Miller.
He was a 1951 graduate of Chaney High School and had served as a Sergeant in the Army during the Korean War. He began his work career at the Open Hearth of the U.S. Steel Corporation and later became a firefighter for the Youngstown Fire Department. He had worked at many stations during his long career, retiring after 33 years from Station No. 1.
He had been a longtime and active member of St. Brendan Church and after moving, became a member of St. Jude's in Columbiana. Jack was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. He will always be remembered as a great husband, father, brother and grandfather, and for his outstanding work ethic.
He is survived by his wife, the former Regina DeMarco, whom he married Jan. 24, 1959; three sons, Joseph Sande Miller of Austintown, Dennis Miller of Columbiana and John Chris Miller Jr. of Youngstown; a sister, Charlotte Begalla of Knoxville, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Madeline Miller of Youngstown; and two grandchildren, Lucas and Jessica Miller.
Besides his parents, Anthony and Elizabeth, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Miller; and his stepfather, Joseph Hensperger.
Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to either Hospice of the Valley or Woodlands Assisted Living Activity Fund in Jack's memory.
