"Together Again"
YOUNGSTOWN - Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel for John J. "Red" O'Neill Sr., 92, who passed away Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Boardman Health Center, after a brief illness, with his family by his side.
John was born March 14, 1924, in Youngstown, a son of the late James P. and Elizabeth (Morgan) O'Neill.
John also known as "Jack" and "Uncle Jack" to many, attended Chaney High School and served in the 145th Infantry of the Ohio National Guard. He was a firefighter for Youngstown City for 30 years, retiring in 1982. John also worked for McKenzie Muffler, drove bus for St. Brendan Church, McHenry Industry, co-owner and co-developer of Pioneer Lake Park, and was owner of the Four Seasons Indoor Putt-Putt. He was a member of the Youngstown Firefighters Local 312, Catholic War Veterans John J. Buckley Post 1292, Fraternal Order of Eagles 3298, and the St. George Croatian Center. He loved golfing, sports, going on bus trips to the casino with his friends from the corner and was a skilled handyman.
His greatest love was for his family and spending time with all of them.
His wife, the former June L. Cadman, whom he married May 6, 1950, passed away Oct. 20, 2010.
John is survived by his children, Ellan (Ron) Wallace of Katy, Texas, Elizabeth "Beth" (Tom) Heinz of Austintown, Kevin (Sandy) O'Neill of Canfield, Joan Shonce of Youngstown and John J. (Sissy) O'Neill of Youngstown; 12 grandchildren, Tiffany, Sean, Craig, Christina, Brian, Aaron, Courtney, Brittani, Joey, EJ, Johnny, and James; and 10 great-grandchildren, Lauren, Avery, Logan, Catherine, Connor, Samantha, Sophia, Hadley, Adaline, and Anna.
John was also preceded in death by seven brothers and sisters; a grandson, Ronnie Wallace Jr.; a great-granddaughter, Juniper (Shonce) Hoffman; and son-in-law Garrett Shonce.
Family and friend may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m. at the funeral home.
