John Pero

May 9, 1925 — May 18, 2018

BOARDMAN - John J. Pero was born May 9, 1925, and died May 18, 2018, in Columbus, after a 10-year battle with Alzheimer's disease.

John was born and raised in North Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada, and was the son of Joseph and Sadie (O'Hanley) Pero.

He was proceeded in death by his parents, Joe and Sadie, and by his brothers, Donald (Flo) Pero and Garfield "Geno" (Jean) Pero.

In 1943, John joined the Canadian Merchant Marines and served during World War II and until 1948. John was proud of the fact that he spent each of his 19th, 20th, 21st, and 22nd birthdays on a different continent.

In 1948, he and his brother, Geno, emigrated to the United States and settled in Youngstown, where he soon met his wife, Loreen Mahoney. John and Loreen were married on May 20, 1950, at the Immaculate Conception Church. They eventually settled in Boardman, where they lived for over 50 years.

John worked for GMAC in Youngstown for 35 years, retiring in 1985. John was quick with a joke and loved to tell stories. He would strike up a conversation with everyone he met. He loved ice hockey, boating on Lake Erie, and Notre Dame football. He attended at least one Notre Dame home game for 41 consecutive years and was the proud owner of a football signed by each of the seven Notre Dame Heisman trophy winners.

John is survived by his wife of 68 years, Loreen (Mahoney); his daughters, Colleen (Tom Tugend) Pero, Maureen (Ned Dowd) Pero-Dowd and Eileen (Ted VanTine) VanTine; and his son, Brian (Susan Pero) Pero. Other survivors include his eight grandchildren, Patrick Dowd, Connor Dowd, Colleen Dowd, Kathleen VanTine (fiancée Trent Vogelhuber), Erin VanTine (fiancée Saul Bauer), Kevin VanTine, Elizabeth Pero, and John Pero. John was also a friend of Bill W. and developed many close friendships in the program, to which he was dedicated for over 42 years.

A Mass of Christian of Burial will be held at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 7345 Westview Drive, in Boardman, at 12:30 p.m. on Monday, May 21, and a private interment.

The family wishes to offer their deepest gratitude to the staff of the Church Residences at Mill Run in Hilliard and its hospice for the patience and kindness they showed toward John over the past three years.
