“Allow the light and the healing presence of Christ to shine brightly through our lives. In that way, all those who come in contact with you will discover the loving kindness of God.” –St. Pope John Paul II

Youngstown – John Paul Shutrump, Jr. 68, passed away peacefully at Mercy Health Hospital, Youngstown, on December 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving siblings.

Born in Youngstown, January 18,1956, John Paul was a son of John Paul Shutrump Sr. and Uletine (Mickie) Portman Shutrump. He graduated from Kiski High School in Leesburg, Pennsylvania, and served as an United States Postal Service carrier for over 10 years.

A devout Catholic, he was a member of St. Joseph Parish in Austintown.

An avid music buff, he looked forward to Casey Kasem’s multiple radio music countdown shows including American Top 40 from 1970-1988. Some of his fondest memories were listening and singing along with the music every New Year's Eve. Years later, his recall of these song hits was effortless as was his memory of important news dates.

He loved learning about space and had an interest in current Consumer Reports product advice. Often, he would be the “go to” for his recommendations on buying products. Curious about multiple subject areas, he preferred spending his time at the Austintown Library. When it came to going out to eat, he had his favorites: Dunkin Donuts and Barry Dyngles. John Paul had a strong interest and passion for Star Trek television shows, movies, storylines and technology. He loved the phrase, “Where no man has gone before”.

His greatest joy was any time spent with family. John Paul will be deeply missed and always remembered by his siblings: Yvonne (John) Moore of Canfield, Laurel (Paul) Campbell of Washington, Pennsylvania, Jeff (Cindy) Shutrump of Chula Vista, California, Celeste McConnell of Truth and Consequences, New Mexico, and Colleen Shutrump of Cardington, Ohio. He leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Maureen Shutrump Bartolo.

Calling hours will be held Friday, January 3, 2025 from 10:00 to 10:45 am at St. Joseph Church in Austintown followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am. John Paul will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery.

The family would like to thank Mercy Health doctors, nurses, and aides who gave their brother wonderful care.

Professional services are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
