YOUNGSTOWN - Prayers will be Monday morning at 9:15 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Brendan Church for José F. Ramirez, 89, who died Friday afternoon surrounded by his family at the home of his daughter.
José was born Nov. 22, 1922, in Tarejero, Michoacan, Mexico, the son of Lorenzo Ramirez and Braulia Aguilera.
He first arrived in the United States in 1944 as part of the Bracero Program, in which he was employed two years as an agricultural worker in the states of Washington and California. After returning to the U.S. in the early 60s to work in agriculture, he moved his family from Copandaro, Michoacan, Mexico, to Youngstown, in May of 1966.
He worked for the B & O, Chessie System and CSX railroad companies, where he was a trackman for 21 years, retiring in 1987. He had been a member of St. Rose of Lima Church.
His wife, the former Alertina Rivera, whom he married March 5, 1947, died June 23, 1996.
He is survived by three daughters, Gloria Gerardo De Los Santos of Youngstown, Elena Nicholas Hanuschak of Youngstown, and Rose A. Chuck Fabry of North Jackson; five sons, Carlos R. Celerina Ramirez, Luis A. Hortencia Ramirez of Oxnard, Calif., Alvaro Diana Hong Ramirez of Pleasant Hill, Calif., Ricardo Ramirez of Youngstown and David R. Lisa Ramirez of Youngstown; 26 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Ricardo; a daughter, Analicia; a granddaughter, Ceara Marie Ramirez; a daughter-in-law, Renee Ramirez; as well as two sisters and a brother.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to Hospice of the Valley in José's memory.
