CANFIELD - Joseph "Joe" J. Bacskaji (Baskey) Jr. passed away Oct. 1, 2015, at Austin Woods Nursing home in Austintown at age 92.
Joe was born Dec. 31, 1922, in Lorain, son of the late Joseph J. and Teresa (Nagy) Bacskaji Sr. He grew up in New Springfield.
Joe excelled in History and Literature, received a History scholarship and graduated from New Springfield High School. World War II interrupted his plans and he completed machinist school in Cleveland. A proud World War II eighth Air Force veteran, he served at varied United States bases and in Ipswich, England. He was a bricklayer and a machinist. Joe retired from Aeroquip (Republic Rubber) and General Motors (UAW local 1714).
While home from the military, he met Elizabeth "Betty" Yasher of New Bedford, Pa. at a dance and in 1945, they were married on Nov. 3, 1945, at Villa Maria in New Bedford. They shared 69 years together in the Youngstown - Canfield area.
Joe and Betty enjoyed being "snowbirds" for over 25 years in Ruskin, Fla. He enjoyed life by telling jokes and stories, traveling, playing cards, shuffleboard, bingo, playing the slots, listening and dancing to music of his son, Bob Baskey's Band and other music. He especially enjoyed taking walks with the late Youngstown Bishop Malone. Joe prayed the rosary daily, was a former parishioner of Youngstown's St. Patrick Church, attended Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Sun City, Fla., and was a parishioner of St. Michael Church in Canfield and St. James the Apostle Church in New Bedford.
In addition to his wife, Betty Bacskaji, Joe is survived by three children, Robert "Bob" (Marsha) Baskey of Boardman, Dr. Clarence Baskey of Canfield and Elizabeth "Jean" Merva of Canfield. He is survived by two grandchildren, Mike Merva and Shelly Roessler. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren and his former son-in-law, Eugene "Geno" Merva.
In addition to his parents, Joe was preceded in death by siblings Veronica Bacskaji, Elizabeth "Betty" Dixon, and James R. Baskey.
Joe's family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Austin Woods Nursing Home, especially Kim, Delia, Kayshia, and Carolyn, and the staff of Crossroads Hospice for their wonderful care of Joe.
Family and friends may call on Sunday, Oct. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, at 3701 Starr's Center Drive, Canfield, and Monday, Oct. 5, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the church. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 5, at St. James the Apostle Church, 4019 U.S. 422, New Bedford. Burial will follow at St. James Cemetery, New Bedford.
