POLAND ? A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday at the Holy Family Church, and prayers offered at 12:30 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel for Joseph V. Ciavarella, 83, who died early Friday morning at Masternick Memorial in New Middletown.
Joseph was born July 30, 1926, in Youngstown to the late Angelo and Mary Fratino Ciavarella.
Joseph was a graduate of East High School, where he played the trumpet, and he earned his Bachelor?s degree from Youngstown State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving as an Radio Man on the USS Europa Sea during World War II.
Joe was a charter member of the Holy Family Church and he was a Past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus Council No. 4471. He was a avid golfer and enjoyed playing cards and Bridge.
He was a cost analyst with Republic Steel and later LTV Steel for over 40 years. He served on the Board of Directors for the Republic Steel Credit Union. He was also an independent tax preparer with his own company, Ciavarella Tax Service.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Anthony; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Louis Martha Ciavarella and Frank Cathy Ciavarella.
He is survived by his wife of over 61 years, the former Pauline Hlay, whom he married May 29, 1948. He also leaves four sons, Robert Deborah of Aurora, Thomas Annie of Poland, Gary Patsy of Poland and Paul Kimberly of Poland; a brother, Michael Angie Ciavarella of Poland; four grandchildren, Daniel of Phoenix, Timothy of Ravenna, Nikki of Poland and Christopher of Poland; three step-grandchildren, Kenneth, Joe and Mike Posey; and a great-granddaughter, Lily.
Friends may call today from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
