BOARDMAN - Prayers will be begin Friday morning at 9:45 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Boardman-Canfield Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at St. Christine Church for Joseph P. Gender, 80, who passed away Sunday evening at his home.
Joseph was born Jan. 15, 1920 in New Castle, Pa., the son of Joseph and Mary Gender and came to this area in he early 1960s and has been a resident of Boardman for 45 years.
Joseph graduated from New Castle High School, where he was a quarterback for the football team. He was a veteran, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was awarded the European Theatre Medal. Joseph retired in 1980 as a locomotive engineer for the Pennsylvania Railroad Conrail. A member of the Union, he was also an instructor for the Locomotive Engineers.
He was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society at St. Christine Church, The Youngstown Garden Club and The Curbstone Coaches. Joseph was also an avid golfer.
Joseph leaves his wife, the former Betty Yatsko, whom he married Aug. 17, 1946; a daughter, Elaine Dennis Doinoff of Tempe, Ariz.; three sons, Thomas Gender of Phoenix, Richard Bonnie Gender of Winter Springs, Fla. and Terry Gender of Newton, Pa.; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Irene Taylor; and a brother, John Gender.
Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home.
