AUSTINTOWN - A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, at 11 a.m., at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, for Joseph G. Hammond, 91, who died Thursday afternoon at Austinwoods Nursing Home.
Mr. Hammond was born on Nov. 23, 1923, in Detroit, a son of Mr. Paul and Anna (Williams) Hammond.
Joe did what many boys his age did during this time, he went to work to help his family. He later entered the U.S. Army, serving his country in the Second World War.
After being honorably discharged in 1946, Joseph began his career as a milk bottler, working for Isaly's Dairy, retiring after 30 years. Most recently, he worked for General Motors, dealing with Fire Prevention until 1987.
Joe was an avid baker, wood worker, and fisherman. He was known especially for his homemade pie, and crafty gadgets.
Joseph leaves behind his loving wife, the former Eileen R. Griesser, whom he married on July 14, 1951.
He is also survived by his four children, Jacqueline (Bruce) McMillan, Anna Ruth Hammond, Eileen (Jeffery) Mitchell, and John Paul (Toni) Hammond, all of Youngstown; a sister, Helen Maiorana, of Youngstown; brother Abraham Hammond of Youngstown; 18 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his daughter, Charlene Davis; son Joseph Hammond; sister Linda Terrago; brother Peter Hammond; and grandson Dow Davis Jr.
The Hammond family will receive friends on Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, and again on Monday, one hour prior to service at the church.
