MESA, ARIZ. - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, and prayers offered at 10 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel for Joseph G. Kanik, 85, of Austintown and Mesa, Ariz., who died Sunday morning at his daughter's residence surrounded by his family.
Joe was born May 29, 1924 in Youngstown to the late Frank J. and Anna Sefcik Kanik.
Joe was a 1942 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and a 1949 graduate of Youngstown College earning his BBA. He was a veteran serving in the U. S. Navy Air Force during Word War II. He retired in 1986 following 37 years of employment with the American Tobacco Company as a district sales manager.
He was a faithful member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, where he served as an usher for many years and former member of the church council. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus, and was a volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He was in his words an avid golfer, and played in numerous leagues throughout the area.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, the former Florence M. Bresko, whom he married July 3, 1950, and she died Feb. 2, 1992; and two brothers, Stephen and Andrew Kanik.
He is survived by his daughters, Susan Dave Davis of Apache Junction, Ariz., Joan Aeppli of Mesa and Jane Kanik of Mesa; three sisters, Ann Tokarsky and Helen Zalka of Youngstown and Jean Zeilinski of Austintown; a brother, Frank Audrey Kanik of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; three grandchildren, Allison Carl Bandura of Phoenix, Britney Davis of Gilbert, Ariz. and Joseph Aeppli of Mesa; and one great-grandchild, Lucy Ryan Bandura.
As a son, husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Joe always put family first. His loving example will continue to shine through those left behind.
Friends may call Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
