Joseph Nicholas Markovitch

YOUNGSTOWN — Joseph Nicholas Markovitch passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, April 18, 2025.

He was born on Aug 16, 1942, in Balinhauser, Germany, moving to the United States in 1949. He was a cherished member of his community and a devoted family man whose legacy will endure through the love he fostered throughout his life. Joseph graduated from Wilson High School in 1961 before furthering his education at Youngstown College, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1965.His career was marked by significant accomplishments.

 He proudly served as a city councilman for Youngstown during the 1980s and later as the Mahoning County clerk of courts in the early 1990s. Joseph dedicated 19 years to career development at Choffin Career Center, retiring in 2008, and spent over 25 years at General Fire Proofing. Beyond his professional achievements.

 Joseph was deeply passionate about coaching. He spent a decade coaching the Fighting Little Redmen and also shared his love for basketball with young athletes, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of many. Joseph’s commitment to his family was unwavering; they were truly everything to him. He is survived by his sons, Joseph and Jeffrey (Robyn) Markovitch. He was a proud grandfather to Jessica (Johnny) Masters, Joey, Luke, Jordyn, Jennah and Jeffrey Markovitch, as well as a great-grandfather to JJ and Julianna Masters. Each of them carried a piece of his spirit and joy.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Nicholas and Eva Surmani Markovitch; his wife, Joyce Scharsu Markovitch, whom he married June 30, 1962, and who passed away on Jan. 4, 2021; and his sister, Mary and her husband Nick Pankewycz.

A visitation is scheduled from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Thursday, April 24, 2025, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at Infant Jesus of Prague Byzantine Catholic Church, located at 7754 South Ave., Boardman, OH 44512.

Joseph Nicholas Markovitch will be remembered for his steadfast dedication to his family, his contributions to his community, and his unwavering spirit in coaching young athletes. He leaves behind a legacy of love, leadership and commitment that will inspire future generations.
