Joseph George Matyi, 85
YOUNGSTOWN Funeral services will held Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 11:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at noon at St. Joseph Church in Austintown for Joseph George Matyi, 85, who passed away Sunday evening at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Boardman surrounded by his family.
Joseph was born Oct. 18, 1922 in Youngstown, the son of Stephen and Anne Haluska Matyi Sr.
Joseph served in the U.S. Army during WWII, serving as a private in the 67th. Artillery in the Africa and France campaigns receiving six Bronze Stars.
Joseph was employed by Republic Steel in the shipping department for 40 years, retiring in 1985. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 1375. He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Austintown.
Joseph enjoyed walking his neighborhood, and especially casino gaming. For anyone who knew Joe, they know he would always start off by saying, "Let me tell you one thing."
Joseph leaves his wife, the former Rita Bucko, whom he married July 19, 1952; a daughter, Paula Gary Golden of Cambridge; a son, Richard Cheryl Matyi Sr. of Austintown; three sisters-in-law, Mary Grace Donald Bucko of Boardman, Helen Matyi of Youngstown and Ruth Joseph DeVincent of Boardman; four grandchildren, Amy Frank Tuscano III, Richard Matyi Jr., Bryan Matyi and Daryl Matyi; a cousin, Rosie Tankovich; and many nieces and nephews.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers, Stephen Matyi Jr., John, Robert and Paul Matyi.
Calling hours will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel.
Burial will be at Resurrection Cemetery.
