POLAND - Prayers will begin Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at the Holy Family Church for Joseph "Joe" H. O'Brien Jr., 82, who died Friday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown.
Joe was born April 24, 1931, in Youngstown, to Joseph H. and Marie (Carney) O'Brien Sr.
He was a 1949 graduate of Ursuline High School. Joe served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955. Upon returning from the military, he worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube and retired from Farmer's Insurance as an insurance agent after 20 years.
Joe was a member of the Holy Family Church and the former Struthers Athletic Club. He coached for the Poland Youth Baseball League and for the Youngstown Class B Astro Falcons for over 20 years. Joe was also inducted into the YMBA Hall of Fame in 1990. Joe was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed Notre Dame football and the Boston Red Sox.
He is survived by his wife, Frankie (Davis) O'Brien, whom he married June 14, 1958; three sons, Martin (Kate) O'Brien of Struthers, Patrick O'Brien of Dublin, Ohio, and Kevin (Lisa) O'Brien of Columbus; and five grandchildren, Jim, Julie, Sean, Molly and Jason.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents.
Family and friends may call Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel.
The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to The American Cancer Society, 525 N Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406.
