BOARDMAN - Prayers will be held Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 p.m. at St. Charles Church for Joseph "Dewey" J. Rade Jr., 92, who passed away Saturday evening at his home with his family by his side.
Joseph was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Youngstown, a son of the late Joseph and Susanna (George) Rade Sr. and was raised from early childhood by his stepmother, Jennie (Schragel) Rade.
Joseph attended Ursuline High School and graduated from The Rayen School. He briefly attended the University of Detroit before serving as a 1st lieutenant in the Army during the Second World War. He received the Purple Heart for severe combat wounds sustained in France during the breakout after the Normandy invasion. After the war, he worked as a cost analyst for Republic Steel until his retirement in 1981.
Joseph was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, who enjoyed gardening, billiards and fishing. He was an avid golfer with exceptional putting skills that often compensated for an untamable fade off the tee. He especially loved bowling. Legend has it, he once paid a friend a substantial sum of money to switch teams so that he could bowl with an attractive brunette who became his future wife.
Joseph leaves his wife, the former Louise E. Korenic, whom he married on Aug. 23, 1947; two sons, James J. (Gay Mayo) Rade of Elkton, Md. and Dr. Jeffrey J. (Dr. Julia Bonacum) Rade of Westborough, Mass.; four grandchildren, Grace and Matthew Rade, Dale and Larry Lent; and two great-grandchildren, Chase and Morgan Lent.
Joseph was also preceded in death by his natural parents, and stepmother Jennie G. Rade; a sister, Catherine F. Rade; and infant brother, Robert Rade.
Family and friends may pay their respects Tuesday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Entombment will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
Material tributes may take the form of donations to Senior Independence Hospice, 6715 Tippecanoe Road Bldg. E Suite 201, Canfield, OH 44406
