Canfield— Joseph A. Simpson Jr., 91, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 13, 2018. Family and friends may call Tuesday, September 18, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Canfield Chapel. Prayers will begin Wednesday at 10:15 am at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home Canfield Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Charles Borromeo Church in Boardman.
Joseph was born on July 18, 1927 in Manhattan New York City, NY., a son of the late Joseph A. Simpson Sr., and Augusta H. Moore. He worked for J. C. Penny’s stores for over 39 years, as a store manager, managing stores in New York, New Jersey, and finally Ohio where he made is home, retiring in 1984.
Joseph was a member of St. Charles Church, volunteering as a CCD teacher and as a Eucharist Minister, and for St. Elizabeth’s Hospitals and Humility of Mary Nursing Homes. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving at one time as the Deputy Grand Knight.
In his free time, Joseph and his loving wife Jean enjoyed traveling a great deal throughout our country and going on cruises. He was a published author of poetry and enjoyed sketching and painting. Joseph also collected autographs and D.V.D.’s and loved shopping at the local flea markets where he collected all kinds of memorabilia.
He leaves behind his children, Ann Marie (John) Bezuyen, of NY, Deborah (Lawrence) Guagenti, of NJ., two granddaughters; Alissa Bezuyen, Amanda (Sean) Gordon, and two great grandchildren; Casey and Henry Gordon. Besides his parents, Joseph is preceded in death by his wife and best friend, the late Jennie “Jean” (Bartolomeo) Simpson who he married on July 7, 1948. Jean died on July 29, 2017, after 69 years of marriage.
In lieu of flowers, donations will gratefully be accepted by the Activities Department of Humility House, 755 Ohltown Road, Austintown, Ohio, to support the events Joseph enjoyed often with fellow residents and friends.
