Joseph Skowron

July 29, 1933 — May 12, 2017

AUSTINTOWN - Joseph James Skowron, 84, passed away peacefully at home on May 12, 2017, surrounded by members of his large, loving family.

Joseph lived in Austintown for nearly 60 years. He grew up on the south side of Youngstown, attending South High School and playing baseball. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Eustis, Va., but hitchhiked home whenever possible to see his fiancée, Vilma Herbick. They were married in 1954.

He spent a few years working in Youngstown on the railroad, like many young men of his generation. He then switched to the retail industry and eventually became a buyer in linens and domestics for Strouss-Hirshberg Company. He switched to sales in 1970, and was a top salesman and manager for several area carpet stores until he retired from Home Carpet in 2005.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Church.

Baseball, music, and cooking gave him joy. He played in the New York Giants minor league system and later as a catcher for the Youngstown Oldtimers, sang in the choir at St. Joseph's, and ran the kitchen at many charity events for area children with cancer. Cooking for family gatherings was what he loved more than anything in his later years.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Vilma (Herbick); his seven children, Deborah (John) Vrabel, Joseph (Catherine) Skowron, Mark (Maureen) Skowron, Paul (Teresa) Skowron, Bethann (Walter) Valantine, Jenifer (Jeffery) Moorhead, and Christopher Skowron; grandchildren Michael, Megan, Joseph, Laurelin, Mary, Louis, Edward, Kady, Nicholas, David, Joseph, Nicholas, Leah, Sarah, Jon Michael, James, Christopher, Nathan, and Samantha; great-grandchildren Mya, Anais, Joseph, Arrianna, Kaylyn, Adyson, Dante, Kahari, Phillip, Eli, Audrey, and Maxwell; brothers Robert, William, Thomas, Ronald, and Donald; and sisters Jean, Marjorie, and Gloria.

Greeting him in heaven are his parents, Joseph and Stella; sisters Dorothy, Patricia, and Kay; and granddaughter Jessica.

Family and friends may call Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel.

Prayers will begin Tuesday at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church.

The family has requested that material tributes take the form of donations to MVI Hospice, 4891 Belmont Ave., Youngstown, OH 44505.
