CANFIELD - A prayer service will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Monday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Boardman-Canfield Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial which will be held at 10 a.m. at St. Christine's Catholic Church for Mr. Joseph Michael Stefko Jr., who passed away on Thursday, May 10, surrounded by his family.
Joe was born Jan. 5, 1930, in Youngstown. He was the son of the late Joseph and Rose Cappabianca Stefko.
Joe was raised on the East Side of Youngstown and graduated from East High School in 1948. He was President of his class and a three-year lettered basketball player.
He married the former Dorothy Dottie J. Mushinski on Nov. 3, 1956, and they raised their two children on the west side of Youngstown. He was a member of St. Christine's Catholic Church. Joe served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a player for the Army Corp Baseball Team.
Joe was appointed to the Youngstown Fire Department in 1955, where he served for over 30 years. He was promoted to an Engineer in 1965, and then Captain in 1975. During his service, he received the Life Saving Award and was recipient of a Citation of Valor. He was honored for saving lives both on and off duty.
After retiring from the fire department, he worked for the State of Ohio Turnpike as a toll collector. Joe was a skilled carpenter in all facets of construction and is remembered for his many building projects he lovingly did for his children.
Joe will always be remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a loving, kind, considerate person who always unselfishly put others first. He took great pride in the accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and wife. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and watching their many activities. He never missed any of their important events, whether it be in Youngstown or Ann Arbor, Mich.
He will be sadly missed by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy; daughter Dr. Sandra Embree; son Dr. Joseph Stefko; son-in-law Tony Embree; daughter-in-law Janice Clark Stefko; and grandchildren, Dr. Rachel Embree, Alyse Embree, Ryan Embree, Jordan Stefko, Jacob Stefko, and Joseph Stefko IV.
Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. on Sunday at the funeral home.
