POLAND ? Prayers will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at the Holy Family Church for Joseph ?Joe? Stoffer, 91, who went home to be with his Lord and Savior on March 18, 2010.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ann: brothers, John, Edward, Andrew and Thomas; and his sisters, Helen, Anne, and Mary.
Joe was a wonderful, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather and dear friend. He was a true gift and blessing to all those that knew him.
Joe is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Mary Krajci Stoffer; sister, Irene; daughters, Marlene Jay Morris and Sherri Belski; sons, Kenneth Stoffer and Donald Stoffer; granddaughters, Shandra Terry McNelis, Brianne Morris, Molly Myers and Hillary Stoffer; and many special nieces and nephews.
Joe was born in Punxsutawney, Pa. on March 20, 1918, and moved to Youngstown at the age of 8.
He graduated from Scienceville High School in 1936, where he lettered in baseball. Joe was employed as a warehouseman by General Fireproofing and retired in 1980 after 42 years of service.
Joe served his country honorably in the Army Air Corps as a Communications Specialist from 1942 to 1945 and achieved the rank of Tech Sergeant. He was stationed in various places in the Pacific including Australia, New Zealand, Guadalcanal, Okinawa, New Caledonia and the Philippines.
Joe was a charter member of the Holy Family Church and Knights of Columbus Council 4471, where he served as its second Grand Knight and for the past 40 years, he served as financial secretary. He was a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Society and a longtime usher at the Holy Family Church. Joe devoted countless hours to these organizations and possessed a strong work ethic. Joe was glad to assist friends and family whenever needed. He touched so many lives in a positive manner and truly made a difference.
Family and friends may call Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Poland Chapel, where a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 6:45 p.m.
Joe will be greatly missed, but is in heaven with Jesus for all eternity. Well done good and faithful servant! He was so much more than what is written here.
