CINCINNATI June C. Ullman, 82, a longtime Canfield resident, passed away Saturday her residence.
Mrs. Ullman was born June Erwin Cunningham, Dec. 25, 1922 in Youngstown, to the late Bruce and Gladys Cunningham.
After a short move to Norwalk, the
family returned to Youngstown. She was a member of the 1933 Camp Fire Girls Gypsy Court and as president of the Youngstown Y-Teens, she presented a bouquet of flowers to Eleanor Roosevelt during the First Lady¹s trip the Valley.
June was a 1940 graduate of South High School, where she was secretary of her class and where she and her friends formed a SubDebs Club, which still gets together today. She attended Ohio Wesleyan University, where she was a member of the Pi Beta Phi sorority.
She married Youngstown resident Mryon E. Ullman Jr. May 15, 1943. The couple resided in Tyler, Texas, and Starksville, Miss., until Mr. Ullman was shipped to Europe during the latter stages of WWII. Mrs. Ullman moved to Youngstown and worked at the United National Bank until her husband¹s return.
Following the war, the couple moved to Ithaca, N.Y., while Mr. Ullman taugh and earned his master¹s degree from Cornell University. Their oldest child,
Myron Edward III, was born during their stay in Ithaca. In 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Ullman moved to Canfield, where they remained for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Ullman was active in many community and charitable endeavors. She co-founded the Canfield United Methodist Church¹s preschool, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. She worked on productions of the
Canfield Players, was twice elected president of the Canfield¹s Women¹s Club and served on the board of the Monday Musical Club. As a 20-year volunteer for the American Cancer Society¹s Reach to Recovery Program, Mrs. Ullman visited hospitalized women afflicted with breast cancer, offering information and loving support. In 1978, she was nominated for the YWCA Woman of the Year in the Loving Kindness to Others category.
The Ullmans were very active in the Canfield Rotary Club. Mrs. Ullman was a proud Rotary Ann, was one of the club¹s first female Paul Harris Fellow and her family hosted seven foreign exchange students.
Mrs. Ullman enjoyed playing tennis, the theater and played in many different bridge clubs, including the Canfield Bridge Club, the Warren Bridge Club and
a Sunday Couples Club. The couple held season tickets to the Kenley Players from its inception in Warren until its last year in Akron. She loved Canfield athletics and was a Youngstown State University football and
basketball season ticket holder for more than 25 years.
Known for her sweet smile and sense of humor, Mrs. Ullman was totally committed to her family. She and her husband spent much of the last 20 years traveling, visiting their children and grandchildren, cruising with family
and friends, as well as spending time at their cottage on Kahshe Lake in Ontario, Canada.
Mrs. Ullman was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Myron; a sister, Gladys Mae Cullen; and a brother, Bruce Cunningham.
She is succeeded by a brother, Guy Hixenbaugh; her seven children, Myron Cathy of Colorado, Carl Kay of Ridgefield, Conn., Chris Paul Stubbins of Cincinnati, Curtis Paula of Paradise Valley, Ariz., Gregory of West Chester, Gretchen Mark Tisone of Williamsburg, Va., and Deborah Shaw of Ponte Vedra, Fla.; 26 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Canfield United Methodist Church, where there will be services at 11 a.m.
