CANFIELD - Prayers will begin at 10:00 AM Monday at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Sorrows Church (Holy Name) at 10:30 AM, for Karen E. Yambar, 73, who passed away Tuesday, June 25, 2013, after a lengthy illness, with family by her side.
Karen was born on April 22, 1940, in Youngstown, a daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth Sherbak Yambar.
She was a 1958 graduate of Chaney High School and attended Youngstown State University, where she majored in Business/Secretarial Studies. She was a former employee of Commercial Motor Freight and General Extrusions and was subsequently employed by the Home Savings & Loan Company of Youngstown until her retirement. Karen was a lifelong member of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church in Youngstown.
As a youth, Karen was a member of 4H and worked with her father on the award-winning Yambar Pony Farm; she excelled at showing ponies and harness racing at fairs in the tri-county state area, winning numerous blue ribbons. In later years, she was a member of the Tamburitzans and played native musical instruments, and she spoke the Slovak language fluently. Karen enjoyed shopping for vintage clothing, taking day trips with friends, and cooking from family recipes. Throughout her life, she was a true professional in all she did and was tenacious and focused on her goals. Karen was clearly a woman before her time. Everyone who met her was warmed by her signature smile and candid storytelling.
Karen is survived by nieces Sharon Yambar and Katie Davis; nephews Rev. Chris (Maureen) Yambar and Tim Yambar; three great-nephews, Justin Davis, Brandon Davis and Joseph Vaught II; a great niece Jana Davis; and two great-great-nephews. She also leaves behind her adopted family of caregivers at St. Mary's Alzheimer's Center in Columbiana.
She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, David Yambar.
