BOARDMAN - A Mass of Christian burial will take place Tuesday, May 26, at 10 a.m. at St. Charles Church for Karl F. Gondel, 98, who passed away peacefully, early Friday morning, at Greenbriar Healthcare Center in Boardman.
Karl was born Dec. 8, 1916, in Youngstown, the son of Joseph S. and Mary J. Hannis Gondel, and was a lifelong area resident.
He was a member of the former Immaculate Conception Church.
Karl attended East High School, where he was a member of the football team.
He married his wife, the former Elizabeth M. Hernan, in 1938.
Karl was known lovingly as "Papa" to all who knew him. He worked for 40 years as a welder at Youngstown Sheet and Tube, Brier Hill Works, retiring in 1979. He also worked with his uncle, Joseph Hannis, painting homes and several churches in Youngstown. Karl loved and took pride in his job at Sheet and Tube and would often talk about his fond memories of working there.
Karl loved his stepside trucks. The whole neighborhood knew his truck when it would go down the street. Karl could also fix anything. Whenever someone needed something fixed, they would call him. He was also very talented with woodworking. He made several beautiful one-of-a-kind birdhouses. He loved to fish at Evans and Pine Lakes.
He leaves his son, Thomas (Kathy) Gondel of Youngstown and daughter Mary Beth (Alan) Hauck of North Jackson; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He also leaves his sister, Marion Slavin and nephew James Slavin of Youngstown.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter Carol J. DelFraino of Poland; son-in-law Louis J. DelFraino Jr. of Poland; and two brothers, Thomas and Raymond Gondel.
Friends may call on Tuesday at the church from 9 to 9:45 a.m.
The family would like to thank Manny Fiol, a good friend to "Papa," and the staff at Greenbriar Healthcare Center for taking such good care of their loved one. They would also like to thank the staff and doctors at Ankle and Foot Care Associates, especially Dr. Lawrence DiDomenico, for taking such good care of Karl.
Professional arrangements are being handled by the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Poland Chapel.
