BOARDMAN - Services will be Friday morning at 11 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel for Katherine A. Zellers, who died Friday afternoon at Beeghly Oaks Care Center.
Katherine was born March 18, 1926, the first of many children of Joe and Stella Skowron. Raised during the Depression on the Warren and Chalmers Avenues.
She was a good girl, but with her fair share of run-ins with the Sisters at St Patrick's, a Bella Donna at South High, she jitterbugged at Riblett's and sang Blues in the Night at her Senior talent show.
Katherine worked at Stone's Grill on West Federal, where she met Paul T., the day before he shipped out to the Pacific. Over the next three years, they wrote long letters and after VJ day, they ran away and got married. They lived in Athens and Cleveland, where she worked in restaurants and department stores to support her husband while he was in school. She came back to Youngstown in 1951 and moved to South Heights, where they lived upstairs above Mrs. Jupp. They found their first house on Maple Drive, then moved to Wolcott.
Three children were born that all survive her, Rick, Rob and Sue.
She lost her husband after 33 years of marriage, a very sad time for all. But then as these things go, she went back to work, taking the job of receptionist at Hill Barth and King, where one day a client, Gordy Harrison, walked in, that she knew going all the way back to South High. They had 11 wonderful years together. All in all it was a very good run, good values, good priorities, and a deep appreciation for food, drink and a cigarette, and a good game of pinochle.
Happily, over the past year, she had been able to look back and count her many blessings that include, two loving daughters-in-law, Chrys and Jean; five treasured grand children, Paul, Alexa, Andy, Wyatt and Isabelle; three great-grandchildren; the memory of her many fun and loyal friends and neighbors; and a very large, dynamic brood of Skowron siblings, Joe Jr., Jean, Marge, Gloria, Bobby, Moose, Whitey, Ron and Don, who survive her, and Dot and Patty, who preceded her in death.
Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Boardman-Canfield Chapel.
