AUSTINTOWN - Prayers will begin Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church for Kathleen J. Manley, 74, who died Wednesday afternoon at Hospice House.
Kathleen was born July 20, 1935 in Detroit, the daughter of Thomas B. and Margaret Spess Simmons, and came to this area in 1938.
She was a 1953 graduate of Ursuline High School and was a founding member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church and St. Joseph Church in Austintown. An active member of St. Joseph's for over 48 years, she served as secretary and vice president of its Ladies Guild and as its president in 1976, 1993, 2000 and 2001.
In 1995, she was commissioned by Bishop Benedict Franzetta as a Leader of Prayer, and also served the parish as a Pastoral Minister, Lector, Eucharistic Minister and as a member of its Restoration and RCIA Committees. In addition to her church involvement, Mrs. Manley volunteered for over 20 years for the Red Cross Blood Drives in Austintown and surrounding communities, was a member and served as first vice president and secretary of AARP Chapter No. 4339, and had worked as a basket artist at Dar Lanes Basket Gifts for over 18 years.
Her husband, Michael A. Manley, whom she married Aug. 8, 1953, died Feb. 21, 1990.
She is survived by her son, Tom and his wife, Heidi Manley of Berlin Center and a sister, Virginia Beil Edwards of Green River, Wyo.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, John Thomas Simmons.
