CANFIELD - A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Church in Canfield for Kathleen Mohl, 85, who died Dec. 13, 2014, at home.
Kathleen was born May 20, 1929, in Pittsburgh, the daughter of Peter Thomas and Rose Marie (Garbo) Hanzas.
She graduated magna cum laude from Carlow University in 1951, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Kathleen attended Columbia University in New York in 1951, for continuing education. She also attended Youngstown State University for reading specialist certification and Westminster College for continuing education and Ohio State for certification in reading recovery.
She was Miss Romper Room on television in Pittsburgh from 1951 to 1952. Kathleen loved to act and sing, having numerous parts in plays and operettas at the Pittsburgh Playhouse.
Kathleen moved to Youngstown in 1960, with her husband, Victor, and three children. She taught English and Reading at the elementary school level, and also English at the high school level for the Canfield School System. She piloted the Remedial Reading Program for Canfield Schools.
She was the treasurer of the Mahoning County Teacher's Association from 1970 to 1975. Kathleen retired from teaching in 1994, after 30 years of dedicated service. After retirement, she volunteered at nursing homes and worked with disabled children and disadvantaged youth.
Kathleen was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Church and taught CCD classes for many years.
She leaves behind her husband, of 61 years, Victor C. Mohl, whom she married on Valentine's Day in 1953. She also leaves a daughter, Carol Sicilia of Canfield, with whom she made her home; a son, Peter (Christen) Mohl of Canfield; a son, Thomas (Kathy) Mohl of Caledonia, Mich.; six beloved grandchildren, Jaclyn Sicilia of Las Vegas, Leah, Dane and Capri Mohl of Canfield, and Sienna and Ryan Mohl of Caledonia; a sister, Mary Ann (Peter) McElvogue of Naples, Fla.; a brother, John (Patricia) Hanzas of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.; and a sister-in-law, Carlin Hanzas of Key Biscayne, Fla.
Kathleen was also preceded in death by her older brother, Thomas Hanzas, early this year.
Kathleen had many gifts where she excelled. She played the piano, wrote poetry and acted in theater productions. Kathleen was an avid reader and had a passion for teaching. She was a blue ribbon cook and baker. She had a green thumb and loved plants and her garden. She will be remembered for her quiet dignity, her grace, compassion for others and her kind and gentle soul.
Kathleen will be dearly missed by the many friends and family who so loved her.
