AUSTINTOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church for Kayte Scarlett Smreck, 70, who passed away on March 26, 2015.
Kayte was born May 17, 1944, in Canton, to Cleola Margene "Tyo" Teuscher of Somerdale. She was raised by her mother and her maternal grandmother, Estella (Riggle) Teuscher.
Kayte graduated from Tusky Valley High School, Mineral City, in 1962. During her youth, she was a 4-H member, sang at the Mineral City Church, played clarinet and bass clarinet in the high school band, and was a member of the TVHS National Honor Society. She graduated from Malone College in 1966, where she was a member of Chorale.
After graduation from Malone, Kayte taught English and Social Studies at Tusky Valley for two years. She was then hired at Canton Local Schools, where she taught Language Arts and Reading until 1991. She served as an adjunct professor and student teaching advisor at Malone College from 1991 to 1998.
On Feb. 14, 1987, she was married to Clement J. Smreck at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Austintown.
Kayte attended St. Joseph Church where she was a vocalist and served as the Sacristan for five years.
She is survived by her husband, Clement of Austintown; her brother and sister-in-law, Jon and Deb Teuscher of Carmel, Ind.; niece Valerie Savage (Greg); and great-nieces and great-nephews Phoebe, Joanna, Will, and Nathan of Reynoldsburg. Also surviving are stepchildren Kathy Smreck, Barb (Louis) Camacci; daughters Kristen (Paul) Jaros and Kimberly (Matt) Miller; grandchildren Tyler and Cameron Jaros, Casey and Madelyn Miller, Patrick Smreck and Caroline (Jerry) Allen and their daughters, Cassandra and Mackenzie, all of the Youngtown area.
Kayte was preceded in death by her mother, Cleola; grandmother Estella; uncle Robert Teuscher; aunt Vesta Teuscher; and nephew Jon David Teuscher Jr.
Family and friends may pay their respects Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Higgins-Reardon Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel, and on Monday from 9:30 to 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Church.
Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery.
